“Our Data-Link units allow us time to fix the problem or shut equipment down before the threshold where damage is likely to occur. Not knowing of high temperatures in our equipment rooms is a big deal. To avoid the loss of telephone service, the system’s ability to notify us of alarms is crucial.”

Ensuring Ultra-high Security and Privacy for Financial Institutions

OVERVIEW

Banks are some of the strictest users in the world when it comes to data security and privacy. And among banks, nowhere are requirements stricter than in Switzerland which has founded its banking system on the privacy that it guarantees its customers. These regulations impact the ability to collect and preserve call records in a call accounting system, where in most situations preservation of specific customer phone traffic in reports would violate Swiss privacy guarantees. This was the problem with one Swiss customer that threatened to block their ability to use call accounting all together. However with the TeleBoss 850 even this call accounting challenge was solved.

THE PROBLEM

Call records contain information which is considered private and not allowed to be stored or tracked, specifically the call record phone numbers.

Even collecting these records temporarily in the call buffer box is a problem for some Swiss financial institutions. The privacy of the bank customers must be maintained without loopholes or caveats. Thus the problem with implementing a call accounting system. Further, transfer of this information over the public internet is also extremely sensitive and must be done with extra attention to data security and authentication. All of the above was the case for one Swiss bank customer and their call-accounting vendor, who found in the TeleBoss 850 the solution they were looking for.

The first solution

In order to collect telephone records which might include customer phone numbers, the phone numbers need removed from the call records upon collection, before they are stored in the buffer memory. The TeleBoss 850 supports a powerful scripting language which lets it manage all aspects of call collection and data storage. The TeleBoss collects the call records using a custom script instead of the normal call collection routing, replacing the phone number digits with X characters as the records come in while leaving the country code and area code intact.

The second solution

Once the phone numbers have been removed, the same script then encrypts the data before writing the records to the TeleBoss flash memory. The data is encrypted using 3DES, ensuring that the data written to flash memory can only be decrypted by someone who has the decryption key (i.e. the call accounting computer).

The THIRD solution

On a regular basis, the stored encrypted data is pushed to a SFTP server file at the central processing site. The SFTP protocol uses Secure Shell 2 encryption using 3DES encryption, ensuring the data is ultra-secure as it passes over the internet. Once on the SFTP server the data is decrypted using a decryption program provided by Asentria. The phone numbers are still X'd out but the rest of the call record is there allowing other types of call reports to be processed.
