How Data-Link can save money and improve safety

A senior telecom specialist is saving her company money and resources by consolidating its call accounting systems. She streamlined operations by replacing three call buffer boxes with a single Asentria Data-Link device. The Data-Link performs the same functions as the three previous products, but it eliminates unnecessary duplication of modems, interfacing equipment and dedicated lines. “Technicians always ask if I can give up any lines,” she says. “Data-Link saved my company three lines per installation.”

She configured the Data-Link to continuously gather call data records (CDR) and traffic data through separate ports. The company’s call accounting software then polls the data automatically every 15 minutes via modem. Applications vary, so Data-Link provides several convenient ways to transfer data automatically: FTP push, PPP connections and others. She chose straight modem polling for this site.

Data-Link also monitors the PBX continuously to detect malfunctions and send immediate notification. This specialist utilizes a combination of data alarm scripts and contact closures to verify switch initialization, recognize trunk and shelf failures, power outages and more. Critical malfunctions trigger alarms that send SNMP traps to her call accounting software, which in turn sends her pager messages.

“I have 10 Data-Link installations, and the Data-Link never breaks down,” she says. “I don’t have to think about it, so I can concentrate on other things.
