A wireless Internet service provider utilizes four Asentria SNMP-Link SL60 units to protect critical and expensive equipment at its communications hub. The SL60 units monitor 40 contact closure inputs: fire detectors, moisture detectors, a thermostat, an air conditioning system, fuse boxes and an uninterruptible power supply. SL60 units can also trigger alarms by interpreting voltage levels of analog sensors. That means any device with a dry contact closure or low voltage output can immediately be included into an SNMP monitoring system.
The company formerly sent alarms through a radio network, but the system crashed several times. They wanted a new system to provide reliability, simple installation into their other locations, and compatibility with their network management software (NMS). Utilizing the Asentria Evaluation Unit Program, the IT staff concluded that the SL60 could provide the solution they needed. With the SL60 units on site, the staff continually discovered more equipment and more sensors that could be connected to the SL60, and incorporated into their monitoring system.
The company now uses the SL60 units to send traps from more than 40 different inputs to their remote NMS via their TCP/IP LAN/WAN. It is a reliable and stable system with a straightforward setup. The IS department now plans to roll out the SL60 units to more than 200 locations.
“The Asentria technical staff is outstanding,” says the information systems manager. “They listened to our needs and helped us accomplish what we needed to do.”
