SNMP Integration Overview
In order to maintain the health of your network you might need to monitor devices which do not natively support the SNMP protocol. Using Asentria products you can extend your SNMP management system to monitor non-SNMP factors such as legacy equipment and environmental conditions. Asentria products offer features useful for SNMP Integration such as:

Factors such as battery levels, contact closures, analog outputs, serial fault messages,
and environmental conditions could all indicate critical conditions which could
affect the health of your network.
Several Asentria products support one or more features useful for SNMP integration
of legacy equipment and environmental conditions. In order to determine which

Monitor Serial Alarms
Non-SNMP devices
frequently issue alarms via serial port. You can set up serial alarm events
based on user-defined “alarm formulas” that the fields and the values
which indicate which serial messages are considered alarms. These alarms then
get sent back to your Network Management System (NMS) via SNMP trap. (back

Monitor Contact Closures
Many legacy and non-network-based devices use contact closures outputs to indicate alarm and system status.
Using Asentria products you can send an SNMP Trap to your NMS based on contact
contact closures inputs connected to environmental sensors, cameras, power systems,
electronic equipment, door and window contacts (for intrusion detection), and many

Monitor Voltage/Battery Status
Asentria products
allow you to integrate and alarm on analog voltage levels from +/- 75vdc or 0-5vdc.
A common application is monitoring battery backup systems, but other devices also
output analog voltage levels such as a radio signal strength output. Asentria
products support both onboard and external analog voltage sensors. (back

Monitor Environmental Sensors
Humidity and temperature
in your remote equipment rooms and cabinets can be easily integrated into your NMS
using Asentria products. Our on-board and external EventSensor™ can monitor
temperature from 32° to 140°, and humidity from 20% to 80%. We also
offer mechanical sensors which can mount on a wall and generate a contact closure
when the environment exceeds a preset threshold. (back

Custom Scripting for Alarm Interrogation
Sometimes
custom scripting is needed in order to interrogate intelligent serial devices or
to evaluate multiple sensor inputs in order to determine if an alarm threshold has
been reached. Several Asentria products support scripting custom functionality
modules to support special applications such as these. (back

Create a Faux-MIB for Legacy Devices
Custom Scripting
can also be used to write an SNMP proxy front-end for legacy equipment so that the
alarm and status values of legacy equipment can be read and written to using standard
SNMP via a faux-MIB within the Asentria product. (back

Control Output Relays
Output relays are available
on Asentria products which are controllable via SNMP or which can be triggered
automatically as an alarm action. Output relays allow you to activate sirens, cameras,
lights or other electronic devices in remote locations, which often saves the time
and expense of sending personnel to a remote site. (back

Alarm Notification Methods
Asentria products
can transmit alarms via various methods, including:
- Modem
- Pager
- SNMP Trap
Alarm messages can go over the network and sometimes over a modem. SNMP Traps are the most common form of alarm notification when integrating with a network management system. To receive SNMP Traps, customers may utilize their existing SNMP software or Asentria AlarmManager software, which is now available free. Some products do not support modem alarms or email alarms.
